Year: 2025 | Type: Group Project | Role: XR Developer | Tool: Unity
Journalists are increasingly tasked with covering extreme weather events like hurricanes, often without proper training in safety protocols, risk assessment, or crisis logistics. This lack of preparedness can endanger crews and compromise news delivery. Under requests from Kunal Majumder and Kathryn Alexandra O'Brien, two journalists awaring of the situation, we developed an XR training experience aimed at preparing journalists to safely and effectively cover extreme weather and civil unrest events. In a team of 26 people, we together created immersive VR scenarios where users assume the role of a field producer, responsible for ensuring the safety of their reporting team while managing the delivery of critical news coverage.
As part of the team, I'm responsible for creating immersive hurricane scenarios within a larger set of five scenarios which make up the entirety of the XR journalist training experience for extreme weather.
To design an immersive XR training experience that empowers journalists to make critical, real-time decisions in hurricane scenarios. This module simulates the high-pressure environment of breaking news during a natural disaster and builds key skills in: situational awareness, emergency preparedness, and safety coordination.
